Moving with pets: your checklist

India welcomes pet dogs and cats moving with their owners, but the paperwork must be right before the flight. Start at least two to three months ahead.

2 to 3 months before

Check India's current import rulesUsually up to two pet dogs or cats per person, travelling with or near their owner. Check the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS) website.
Microchip your petAn ISO microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccine.
Rabies vaccinationGiven at the right time before travel, usually at least 21 to 30 days and within a year.
Other vaccinesFor dogs, usually distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and leptospirosis.
Book with an airline that carries petsCheck crate sizes, breed rules and whether your pet flies in the cabin or the hold.

The paperwork

Apply for India's advance no-objection certificate (NOC)From AQCS, before travel.
Get the health certificateSigned by a vet and endorsed by the government of the country you're leaving (for example USDA in the US or CFIA in Canada).
Get any export permit the country you're leaving needsFor example, the UAE requires one from its ministry.
Keep copies of everythingPrint them and keep them with you on the flight.

Arrival

Fly into an airport with an AQCS officeSuch as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata or Hyderabad.
Clear the pet at the AQCS counterWith your passport, the NOC and the health certificate.
Register with a vet near your new homeAnd check your society's rules on pets.

Do pets need quarantine in India?
